Abstract

Reading skill is one of the basic skills in teaching Arabic to nonnative speakers. From reading, knowledge of words, sentences and phrases used in speech and writing increases. There are many methods and theories in teaching the skill of reading, each with its advantages and disadvantages alike, namely the literal method, the phonemic method, the word method, the sentence method, and the association method. Reading skills range from easy to difficult and include line-reading skills (literal reading), interlinear reading skills (interpretative reading), behind-line reading skills (creative reading), as well as content evaluation (critical reading). The primary goal of reading is to comprehend what is read, and it is never separate from the process of reading, but some people read and spend a long time reading and do not read for a specific goal. Understanding is the basis of the reading process, and it is necessary in it. There is no point in reading without understanding because the reader cannot take the inference or the benefit from his reading.
