Abstract
Corn silk is considered as a household waste whose utilization has not been maximized, even though corn silk has the potential as a functional food. Corn silk contains flavonoid active compounds which can reduce blood pressure. The Purpose of this studyto analyze the effect of corn silk herbal drinks on blood pressure. This study was experimental true study with a randomized matched pretest and post- test control group design. Sprague-Dawley rats divided into five groups with six rats in each group. Treatment groups include K (-), K (+) given CaptoprilⓇ 0.45 mg/200 g BW, Pl given corn silk 0.4 gr/200 g BW, P2 corn silk 0.8 gr/200 g BW, P3 given corn silk 1.2 gr/200 g BW of 100 ml boiling water for fourteen days. Systolic blood pressure was measured by blood pressure analyzer with the tail-cuff method. The results was analyzed by One Way ANOVA to determine differences in systolic blood pressure before and after treatment. One Way ANOVA test followed by Post Hoc Duncan to determine the mean difference in systolic blood pressure between treatment groups. Corn silk herbal drinks have a significant effect on reducing systolic blood pressure in hypertension with p=0.000 (<0.05). Corn silk 1.2 gr/200 g BW and 0.8 gr/200 g BW most effectively reduce systolic blood pressure in hypertension with 47% and 41.70% reduction in blood pressure. From this study can be concluded thatcorn silk herbal drinks decreased systolic blood pressure in hypertension. Key Word: Corn silk, hypertension, systolic blood pressure
