Abstract
In Indonesia, Betel Nut (Areca catechu L.) is an easy-to-find plant, widely used as traditional medicines and even processed into natural dyes. Cosmetics are widely used by different ages, including teenagers who use cosmetics a lot to care and protect the skin from the outer environment. Lip balm is one of the cosmetic that works by forming a layer of oil on the surface of the lips as a moisturizer and also gives color, but there are already many cosmetics on the market using synthetic dyes. The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics of lip balm preparations from betel nut seed extract (Areca catechu L.) as a natural dye and to determine the concentration of betel nut extract (Areca catechu L.) which can produce the stability of the preparation according to dosage quality standards. In this study was an experimental method using betel nut seed in different concentration 4%, 6%, and 8%, formulate to make lip balm. The formulation then examinated to look for the best physical quality. The examination include organoleptic tests, homogeneity, pH, melting point, dispersal power, spreading power, oles, hedonics, and stability. The result was all formulation meet the requirements of organoleptic tests, homogeneity, good spreading power, and have pH value between 6.13-6.56, a dispersion power was 6.3 6.8cm, and a melting power was 50-53.3oC. Based on the test results, it can be concluded that betel nut extract can be formulated as a natural dye in lip balm and all preparations have good stability.
