Abstract

Exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause a variety of skin problems, including the risk of cancer. The use of sunscreen is effective in protecting the skin from the adverse effects of UV rays. Green grasshopper leaves (Cyclea barbata. Miers) contain flavonoid compounds, alkaloids, and tannins that function as antioxidants and have the potential to be used as active ingredients in sunscreens. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in the concentration of green grasshopper leaf extract on the Sun Protector Factor (SPF) value in sunscreen gel formulations. This study uses an experimental design with a maceration method to extract green grasshopper leaves using 96% ethanol. The gel is formulated with HPMC as a gel-former, glycerin, and propylene glycol as a humectant, as well as green grasshopper leaf extract with concentrations of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3%. Physical evaluation includes pH, viscosity, dispersion, and adhesion tests, as well as measurement of SPF values using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The results showed that all gel preparations had a pH in the range of 5.03–6.74 and a viscosity of 15,502–26,597 cPs. The highest SPF value was obtained in a formulation with a 3% extract of 5.03 (medium protection category). Data analysis using ANOVA showed an insignificant effect between the increase in extract concentration and SPF value (p>0.05). This study concludes that an increase in the concentration of green grasshopper leaf extract does not significantly increase the SPF value in sunscreen gel preparations.
