Abstract
A sample of the last five years on a national scale shows that around 1,740,000 people out of 150,000,000 Indonesian adults currently experience anxiety disorders. In fact, this disorder causes suicidal tendencies in the range of 80–90% of suicide cases. Even on a global scale, there is an increase in sufferers of anxiety disorders of up to 25% throughout the world. Thus, healing treatment is needed to deal with anxiety disorders. However, developments in psychology and psychotherapy at this time could only make people with anxiety disorders feel better. So, this study aims to analyse the thoughts of Kiai Ihsan Jampes about shukr to be projected into psychotherapy to cure anxiety disorders. Critical analysis and descriptive methodologies are used in this qualitative research utilizing the Psychological Sufism approach. The Psychological Sufism approach is intended to produce comprehensive therapies to overcome anxiety disorders. This study’s findings show that Kiai Ihsan Jampes’ shukr has a comprehensive meaning. Shukr comprises three main components: ‘ ilm, hal, and ‘amal. ‘Ilm means knowledge of favours and gifts, and it believes that all blessings come from Allah SWT. Then, Hal exists after ‘ilm. It is formed through knowledge and belief, resulting in a peaceful soul, thus presenting a feeling of pleasure and love favouring Allah SWT in the form of submission and obedience (Iman). ‘Amal is the result of the balance of ‘ilm and hal. Shukr can be a therapy for anxiety disorders when viewed from its similarity to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Analysis shows that the ACT Triflex and the three main principles of Shukr are almost the same in the main phases of healing. ACT Triflex goes through steps of cognitive acceptance and diffusion. Meanwhile, shukr through ‘ilm is to condition the mind. ACT Triflex goes through the stages of contact with the moment and self-observation—meanwhile, shukr through hal. In the final step, aim to generate ‘amal. Although ACT Triflex and Shukr both aim to develop action, ACT Triflex only aims to bring patients to a place where they feel better. The activities that feel better are determined by the values that the patient feels good about. At the same time, shukr is not limited to making patients take better actions only. Shukr is committed to making patients act well because they are fully aware and cured. In addition, Shukr rests on the aspect of iman. Thus, in shukr, healing is not only due to therapy but also faith. That is, recovery is believed to exist because of belief in Allah SWT as the healing Provider. By having faith in Allah SWT, anxiety will be reduced. Besides helping heal, shukr also leads the patient to the highest happiness, namely ma’rifatullah. So, shukr can be a more comprehensive therapy. Finally, researchers realize that this research still needs improvement to be projected to contribute to the growth of Islamic psychotherapy. For that matter, the writer encourages other scholars to study the Islamization of modern psychology through literary and field research.
