Abstract

Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country. According to The Royal Islamic Startegic Studies Center, the Muslim population in Indonesia will reach 86.7% of the population in 2023. So it has great potential for the welfare of the people through the Islamic financial sector. In the social economy there are several activities that solve economic problems, one of which is waqf. Waqf plays a significant role in generating and distributing wealth to promote welfare. Thus, waqf institutions have an important role to realize the potential of waqf owned, by making efforts to optimize waqf management. Therefore, the management must be done optimally. The existence of waqf and waqf empowerment is highly dependent on the nadzir. Waqf management will be more directed and fostered to the maximum, if the nadzir is competent and professional. Thus, waqf institutions must have nadzir governance as a control in waqf management. This study aims to measure and examine the effect of good nadzir governance on waqf collection in Indonesia. This study will provide information involving important factors that must be considered (improvement of institutional performance, implementation of good nadzir governance efforts to improve the quality of management in waqf institutions, thus supporting the development of Indonesian society), where these factors can encourage people to donate waqf, and understand the benefits in the waqf instrument itself. This research is a quantitative study focused on waqf nadzirs in five institutions, namely Dompet Dhuafa, Gontor Foundation for the Maintenance and Expansion of Waqf, Indonesian Rumah Wakaf Indonesia, Yayasan Dana Sosial Al-Falah (YDSF), and Wakaf Al-Azhar which are used as samples of this study. The research sample collected and used in this study was 120 research samples based on purposive sampling method. The data obtained were taken using a questionnaire and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) supported by SmarPLS 3.2.9 The results of this study indicate that the variables of transparency, reputation, and effectiveness have a significant positive effect on waqf collection. These results indicate that the implementation of good nadzir governance in Indonesia can increase waqf collection. If waqf management in Indonesia develops optimally, then economic problems in Indonesia can be resolved. With this, it is recommended for all waqf nadzirs to optimize the implementation of good nadzir governance, in order to increase waqf collection. The implications of this research are expected for further researchers to focus more on nadzir governance. Therefore, waqf management institutions or philanthropic institutions to optimize performance and in order to spread benefits to people in need. For the development of social institutions in Indonesia, especially in productive waqf management. In addition, the government, through the OJK, is also expected to develop policies, especially in terms of developing social institutions that manage waqf funds and optimizing the performance of institutions so that nothing harmful happens to stakeholders.
