Abstract

Derivational and inflectional affixes are two types of morphological structures in language. Derivational affixes modify the meaning and class of a word, creating entirely new words, while inflectional affixes adjust only the word’s form, without altering its meaning or class. This study investigates derivational and inflectional affixes in articles from islamweb.net. The research has two main objectives: (1) to classify the derivational and inflectional affixes found in selected articles and (2) to analyze how these affixes contribute to word formation. The research utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on seven selected articles published on islamweb.net between April and August 2024. To collect the data, the researcher used document analysis, and the steps to analyze used the Krippendorf theory, such as identification, classification, tabulation, and description. The findings reveal 1253 affixes, divided into derivational and inflectional categories. The study identified 27 types of derivational affixes, including suffixes like -ion, -ment, and -al, and prefixes like un-, dis-, and pre-. In contrast, inflectional affixes included six types, such as -s, -ing, and -ed. Overall, inflectional affixes were more frequent, totaling 799 data, compared to 458 data of derivational affixes. This indicates that inflectional affixes are more prevalent in the selected articles, possibly reflecting their functional role in grammatical structure over word class changes.
