Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is a medical condition that occurs during menstruation, characterized by pain, cramps, and iscomfort in the abdominal or hip area. Prolonged pain makes dysmenorrhea sufferers need drugs such as analgesic drugs. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) has nalgesic effects commonly used to reduce dysmenorrhea pain in women. Continuous use can cause to side effects such as liver damage, and hypertension. Therefore an alternative is needed, namely herbal medicine, one of which is the utilization of citronella. Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus) has an essential oil compounds such a citronellol, geraniol, and citronellal which have anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. This research aims to determine the quality evaluation results of citronella essential oil aromatherapy liniment preparations and their effectiveness for dysmenorrhea pain reduction therapy. This type of research is an experimental study by making 4 formulas of liniment aromatherapy preparations with citronella essential oil variations, namely 0% (F0); 20% (F1); 25% (F2); 30% (F3). The preparation evaluation test includes organoleptic, homogeneity, irritation, pH, and stability tests. While the effectiveness test was given to 24 respondents who experienced dysmenorrhea. Data analysis used Kruskal Wallis with SPSS 16.0 and a significance value of 95%. The results showed that citronella essential oil aromatherapy liniment preparations in the visual test had a clear pale yellow color, citronella aroma, and a slightly thick liquid texture. All preparations are homogeneous, non-irritating, with pH values 5-6, and stable preparations. Citronella essential oil aromatherapy liniment preparation has an ignificant effect (p>0.05) in accelerating the healing time of dysmenorrhea.
