CHINA’S EFFORTS TO EXPAND ECONOMIC DOMINATION IN THE SOUTH ASIAN REGION THROUGH THE CHINA-PAKISTAN ECONOMIC CORRIDOR (CPEC) COOPERATION IN 2015-2019
Abstract
China’s economic strength, which is growing every year, has made China the secondlargest economy in the world so that it can influence the spirit of the global economic
system. China continues to seek to expand its economic influence by establishing economic
cooperation with other countries, one of which is Pakistan through the China-Pakistan
Economic Corridor (CPEC). CPEC is one of the main economic corridors for the Belt
Road Initiative (BRI) as well as China’s efforts to expand its economic dominance in
the South Asian region. This study aims to analyze China’s efforts to expand economic
dominance in the South Asian region through CPEC economic cooperation. This research
uses descriptive analysis qualitative research method with literature study data collection
techniques through documentation techniques, which are analyzed based on the concept of
hegemonic stability and the concept of national interest. The results of this study indicate
that China is a hegemonic country with great economic power, seeks to achieve its national
economic interests, and expand its economic dominance in the South Asian region through
CPEC economic cooperation. China’s efforts to expand its dominance in the South Asian
region include; become one of the main exporters in the South Asian region, expansion
of the Chinese market through CPEC, and infrastructure development within CPEC to
facilitate trade access between China and countries in South Asia. China uses a liberal
economic system in every trade and economic activity in the CPEC cooperation. This aims
to achieve the interests of China and Pakistan in the expansion of a liberal market system
that can improve the economies of both countries.
