Abstract

In studying the relationship between the Qur’an and science, the scientific interpretation approach offers a perspective that aims to bridge the Qur’an and modern science. Nidhal Guessoum, a contemporary Muslim scientist, developed a method of scientific interpretation that combines contextual and rational approaches that emphasize the importance of avoiding the tendency of literal interpretation in scientific interpretation so that the understanding of Qur’anic verses remains in line with established scientific principles. This research aims to analyze Nidhal Guessoum’s scientific interpretation method, including the basic principles that are the basis of his approach and step in interpreting the verses of the Qur’an. It focuses on how the method is used to understand Qur’anc verses related to scientific phenomena and criticism of them. This research is included in the category of library research that uses qualitative methods with a focus on narrative analysis. A descriptive-analytical approach is applied to analyze the scientific interpretation methods developed by Nidhal Guessoum deeply. Nidhal Guessoum adopts an integrative approach to interpreting science, combining the understanding of the Qur’an with modern scientific methods. He emphasizes the importance of scientific objectivity, avoiding scientific claims that cannot be empirically verified and analyzing the verses in historical and linguistic contexts. Guessoum developed Syahrur’s hermeneutic method and balanced between science and religion. He compares classical interpretation with modern views, highlighting the differences in approaches. Although the goal is to maintain objectivity, this method has the potential to lead to relativism in religious understanding, especially when verses that cannot be empirically tested are questioned according to current scientific theories The suggestions emphasize the importance of understanding the interpretation of the Qur’an using various approaches while still holding to religious principles. The researcher hopes this study will inspire further scientific interpretation studies.
