Abstract

One of the causes of skin problems is exposure to UV rays and free radicals and the use of cosmetics with chemicals. This causes irritation, dull skin, black spots and premature aging. Based on these problems, it is necessary to use alternative herbal ingredients with antioxidant properties, including areca nut (Areca catechu L.). The aim of the research was to determine the antioxidant activity of the areca nut extract facial serum gel preparation which meets the preparation quality standards. Facial serum gel is made with different concentration of areca nut extract, namely 1.5%; 3%; 4.5%; 6%. Data analysis was carried out by comparing the quality evaluation results with SNI, then analyzed with SPSS 26 using the One Way Anova test. The results show that the the areca nut extract facial serum gel preparation have a distinctive smell of areca nut extract, are red in color and thick in shape. Based on the pH test, it is in the range 5.09- 5.60; spreadability 5.13- 6.06 cm; and viscosity 1363.0- 4703.0 cPs. The results of the One Way Anova analysis test showed a non-significant value in the spreadability and viscosity test of <0.05, which means that the areca nut variations of concentration extract has an effect on the characteristics of the areca nut extract facial serum gel and a significant value in the pH test of >0.05, which means the variation of concentration does not effect the characteristic of serum gel. influential. The antioxidant activity test with the DPPH method, showed the 4th formula has the highest antioxidant activity with a value of 47,039 ppm.
