Catholic's Views on Childfree

Fahima Ilmi, Hasna
Abstract
Childfree is a lifestyle choice that is gaining popularity in several countries around the world, especially among the younger generation. However, this choice diverges from the traditional values surrounding marriage and family, which emphasize procreation. The institution of marriage, once solely a vanue for having children, has envolved into a bond between two individuals. Catholicism, with its social teachings, offers a comprehensive perspective on marriage, family, and the role of children within these context. This research aims to explore the Catholic’s view on childfree lifestyle. By the ends of this study readers will have a clearer understanding of how Catholic doctrine relates to the societal trend of choosing to remain childfree. In this qualitative literature research, a sociological approach is used which aims to find out social responses regarding this childfree choice, so that social opinions can be known about the rise of childfree choices among the public, especially from the responses of Catholics as well as the Catholic church. The descriptive analysis method is also used to trace the doctrines of society, especially Catholics, towards the childfree phenomenon. Then, this view is associated with Catholic social and moral teachings contained in Catholic scripture. The results of this study explain that childfree is a life choice that deviates from the social values and norms of society and Catholic social teachings. With the various stigmas given by society to this life choice, it should be able to explain the social view of this life choice, namely that society is against this choice. It is also based on Catholic social teachings that explain the sacredness of a family with the presence of children who replicate a small church of a complete family. Although every couple who chooses to go childfree has their own reasons for making this decision, society and Catholic teachings still deny this life choice. The author acknowledges the limitation of this study and welcomes constructive criticism and suggestions from readers to enhance the quality of this research.
