Polygamy In Jewish
Abstract
The phenomenon of polygamy in ancient times did not seem to be
able to show the obedience of the Jews to their religion, throughout Jewish
history many of the leaders and kings practiced polygamy. Polygamy has
been known and practiced for centuries in many Jewish communities and
the views of some Jewish groups towards polygamy at the time did not pose
a problem. Basically, polygamy is not prohibited in Jewish scripture, but
Western Jews oppose the practice of polygamy because it is considered
immoral.
This research is a qualitative literature, using a theological approach
to explain the principle of polygamy applied in Judaism based on History,
scripture, and some views from rabbis in Judaism. The method used is a
description to explore the consistency of the concept of polygamy in
Judaism. The researcher also used an analytical method to analyze Jewish
views related to the concept of polygamy.
On this basis, this study aims to explain the doctrine and practice of
polygamy in the Jewish context based on its history and holy books.
Because several groups in the Jewish religion have different views
regarding the practice of polygamy.
Polygamy has been known and practiced for centuries in many
Jewish communities. In ancient Israelite culture, polygamy was not only an
acceptable form of marriage, but in certain circumstances it was also
recommended. Following the prohibition of polygamy enacted by Rabbi
Gershom in the early eleventh century, this prohibition stopped in
Ashkenaz, but continued in other Jewish communities.
This study concludes that the Jewish religion does not prohibit
polygamy, even in the Jewish scriptures it is not explained in detail about
the prohibition of polygamy. However, polygamy is considered to be a nonideal marriage
