Rahman, Shofia Ristiana (2025) RELIGIOUS MODERATION AND RADICALISM IN RELIGIOUS MODERATION VILLAGE EMPANGSARI, TASIKMALAYA. S1 Undergraduate thesis, Universitas Darussalam Gontor.
Abstract
Radicalism is a serious challenge that threatens social stability and the value of tolerance, including in Tasikmalaya. This research analyses the relationship between religious moderation and efforts to counter radicalism with a case study of the Religious Moderation Village in Tasikmalaya. On 26 December 1996, a major riot occurred in Tasikmalaya, triggered by irresponsible people and provoked by many people, leading to acts of violence with religious and racial backgrounds. This event highlighted the importance of religious moderation in maintaining harmony in a multicultural society. Empangsari Village in Tasikmalaya, which was named Kampung Moderasi Beragama on 26 July 2023, is a successful example of efforts to maintain inter-religious harmony for 28 years. This research aims to: 1. Describe the definition of religious moderation according to the views of religious leaders in Empangsari Village, Tawang District, Tasikmalaya. 2. Analyse the various efforts made by the village in building and maintaining inter-religious harmony. This research is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the application of religious moderation as a solution in maintaining harmony in the midst of community diversity. This study uses qualitative research with grounded research method and sociological approach to explore the definition of religious moderation in Empangsari, Tawang, Tasikmalaya. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with religious leaders and local communities, direct observation of community activities, and document analysis related to the efforts made by the community to maintain inter-religious harmony. This grounded research method aims to intensively describe the field reality and explore the community's efforts in building inter-religious harmony in the area. Empangsari Village has succeeded in becoming a model of success in implementing religious moderation with an inclusive, tolerant and equitable approach. The definition of religious moderation in this place includes the value of balance (wasatiyyah). Various religions in Empangsari are supported through fair services, joint social programmes, and interfaith cooperation in social activities. Community-based programmes have proven effective in strengthening the value of moderation and reducing the potential for religious-based conflict. All existing religious teachings, such as Islam with the definition of wasathiyah, Christianity with compassion, Buddhism with Majjhima Patipada, and Confucianism with the principle of empathy (Ren principle), emphasise balance, tolerance, and harmony in social life. This research is far from perfect, so the next research is expected to be better than this, so it is recommended to be developed through comparative studies with other regions, the use of quantitative approaches to measure the impact of religious moderation, as well as in-depth analysis of the role of religious leaders, social media, and technology in building social harmony and preventing radicalism. Thus, further research can provide broader and more strategic insights into the application of religious moderation values. Key Words: Religious Moderation, Radicalism, Moderation Village, Wasatiyyah
