Kanzha Shibby, Siti Meuthia (2025) DESACRALIZATION OF THE TRINITY CONCEPT IN JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES VIEWS. S1 Undergraduate thesis, Universitas Darussalam Gontor.
Abstract
Siti Meuthia Kanzha Shibby 422021215165 The Trinity is a fundamental and sacred doctrine of Christianity that has been the subject of theological discussion for centuries. However, views on the Trinity vary widely among various Christian denominations, including Jehovah's Witnesses who have interpretations of the Bible that are unique to most Christendom. These differences in interpretation often lead to debates and misunderstandings in the context of religious dialogue. Although several studies have addressed the doctrine of the Trinity, in-depth studies of Jehovah's Witnesses' biblical interpretations and scholarly publications on this doctrine have yet to be found. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap by analysing in depth how the concept of the Trinity is viewed by Jehovah's Witnesses. This research employs a type of library research with a qualitative data collection method. The data is collected from original literature of Jehovah's Witnesses, such as the Bible, books, magazines, even academic works related to the Trinity in the view of Jehovah's Witnesses. Using a theological approach, in addition to knowing more, a content analysis approach was also used to analyse the data and thoroughly describe the concrete data of Jehovah's Witnesses. So, the stages of this research include identifying sources, collecting data, analysing data, and finally drawing conclusions. The results of this study are; First, Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe in the Trinity in their beliefs, and hold that there is only one God, namely Jehovah, with Jesus as a messenger of Jehovah not as a person of God, and the Holy Spirit is an active force that helps Jehovah in carrying out his tasks. Second, the process of desacralisation of the Trinity by Jehovah's Witnesses is removing the sacredness of the Trinity as a fundamental belief, by attempting to restore the sacredness of pure biblical teachings and performing a literal interpretation of biblical verses and as well as rejecting the inclusion of church traditions also philosophical thought. This research aims to enhance the scientific study of religious studies, particularly in elucidating the significance of the concept of the Trinity as understood by Jehovah's Witnesses. It will also explore how Jehovah's Witnesses have undergone a process of desacralization concerning the Trinity, ultimately transforming it into a sacred belief for their community. Furthermore, this study is anticipated to serve as a valuable reference for those interested in this area of research. Keywords: Trinity, Jehovah's Witnesses, Sacred
