Abstract

Catholicism emphasizes that love is the primary basis of a relationship. Catholicism explains that true love should involve commitment, sacrifice, and the desire to build a life together. The document Amoris Laetitia is a document that discusses explicitly how to love in relationships and families. This study aims to prove that the love languages were appropriated and suitable to be used as a practical guide in understanding the Catholic doctrine of love, through that, Catholics would easier to capture the intent of Catholic teaching contained in the Amoris Laetitia document. This research is Qualitative with a descriptive-analytical method, or more precisely through content analysis of the Amoris Laetitia document, to identify how Gary Chapman's theory of five love languages—Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch—was reflected in the church's teachings on love. Through a theological and Psychology approach, the researcher shows the relevance between modern psychological theories and Catholic theological teachings, especially in the doctrine of love. This research shows that the points of love language are aligned with several articles in Amoris Laetitia, which can be a spiritual guide for Catholic families. However, despite the alignment, Catholics tend not to explicitly recognize the link between the language of love and church teachings. The language of love can still be used as a framework for expressing love in the family, although it must be adapted to the teachings of the church. In the Islamic view, love is seen as a spiritual path that connects humans to Allah SWT. Islam emphasizes spiritual love, while Catholicism prioritizes adapting the language of love to the holistic teachings of the church, although Catholicism does not explicitly mention the language of love. Based on this research, the researcher concludes with several suggestions for future research, it is hoped that future research can analyze the love languages in Amoris Laetitia in terms of its psychological and phenomenological aspects, researcher also hope that there are other practical theories besides the love languages in understanding Catholic dogma. Keywords: Amoris Laetitia, Love Language, Gary Chapman.
