Yulaikha, Oktafiyani (2025) THE CONCEPT OF SALVATION IN CALVINIST AND LUTHERAN CHRISTIANITY. S1 Undergraduate thesis, Universitas Darussalam Gontor.
Abstract
The concept of salvation is a central theme in Christianity, particularly in the Protestant tradition. Various perspectives on salvation emerge from different denominations, including the Calvinist and Lutheran streams. This thesis research about Lutheran’s view based on Martin Luther’s thought and Calvinist’s view based on John Calvin’s thought about salvation. The background of this study lies in the differing views on salvation, which significantly influence Christian theological understanding, especially regarding the role of human will and divine grace. This study aims to analyze the concept of salvation according to Martin Luther within the context of Lutheran Protestant Christianity and implicitly compare it with Calvinist views. Thus, this research is expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of the doctrine of salvation, which forms the foundation of the Protestant Christian faith. The research is qualitative such as a theological approach for giving more comprehension of religious such as doctrinal issues, ethics, explanation of sacred texts, and answers or reflection on all kinds of various philosophical and theological inquiries. The writer also uses other methods such as descriptive methods to explain the character of Calvin and Luther, analysis methods for observing deeply through several tittle’s variables and comparative method which compares both of Calvinist and Lutheran two influential Christian denominations. The results reveal that Luther firmly rejects the notion of free will in matters of salvation. According to Luther, salvation is purely the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Human will is entirely bound by sin and incapable of choosing God without divine intervention. This concept is a foundational element of the Lutheran understanding of salvation, emphasizing sola gratia (grace alone) and sola fide (faith alone). As a recommendation, the writer suggests further research on the relevance of Lutheran and Calvinist in modern theological and pastoral contexts, especially in addressing the challenges of globalization and religious pluralism. A deeper understanding of this concept of salvation is expected to enrich ecumenical dialogue among denominations and strengthen the faith of congregations amidst changing times.
