Abstract

The phenomenon of Feminism is often become a subject of a complex debate, especially when juxtaposed with religious perspectives. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, as a contemporary feminist figure, has provided sharp criticism of Islamic teaching that she considers detrimental to women's rights. Her criticisms have caused pros and cons, both from feminists and from Muslims, so it is interesting to study more deeply from the point of view of Feminism and criticism of Islamic understanding. The purpose of this research is how Ayaan Hirsi Ali actually views Feminism and presents criticism of the concept, and this research aims to find out and analyze some of the criticisms that arise against Ayaan Hirsi Ali's understanding of Feminism, especially in relation to Islamic teachings. The approach used by this research is a philosophical, and uses descriptive-analytical methods, critical evaluation, and methods of analyzing the works and views of Ayaan Hirsi Ali. This approach taken to examine in depth how Ayaan Hirsi Ali interprets Islamic doctrines related to women's issues. This research shows that Feminism according to Ayaan Hirsi Ali is the thought of women to demand emancipation or equal rights with men by releasing women from oppression related to religious practices and doctrines, especially Islam. However, this definition is considered less precise when viewed from the perspective of Murtadha Muthahhari, who argues that Islamic doctrine does not deprive women of their freedom or harm them. The researcher found that Ayaan Hirsi Ali's views on Feminism are based on her life experiences, which in philosophy is called a priori logic. This approach is criticized because it tends to provide a limited and inaccurate picture, especially in understanding religious teachings in depth. Ayaan Hirsi Ali also has her own interpretation of verses about gender, such as Al-Baqarah verse 223, which she considers to describe women as "offerings" for men's desires. In fact, this verse actually describes women as "fields" in a beautiful narrative to glorify women. The researcher concludes that Ayaan Hirsi Ali lacks a comprehensive understanding of Islamic teachings and tends to use an a priori approach, which is considered inappropriate in understanding the deep essence of religious teachings. The researcher realizes that there are limitations in this study, especially regarding the number of sources and the subjective interpretation of the researcher. The researcher hope to another researcher who are interested in this topic can develop the research by more powerful references.
