Ulfa, Norma Amalia (2025) THE PHILOSOPHY OF LOVE IN THE VIEW OF JEAN-PAUL SARTRE AND JALALUDDIN RUMI (A COMPARATIVE STUDY). S1 Undergraduate thesis, Universitas Darussalam Gontor.
Abstract
The discussion of love is a topic that remains perpetually relevant and engaging. It seems as though nothing in this world moves without being driven by love. However, beyond this notion, we often encounter individuals who fear or even refuse to engage in relationships or feelings of love. This perspective is similar to existentialist thinkers who view love as negative and paradoxical. This research aims to compare the concept of love from Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialist perspective with the concept of love from the Sufi perspective of the renowned mystic, Jalaluddin Rumi. The study adopts a Sufi approach and employs a qualitative comparative method to analyze and juxtapose Sartre's Philosophy of Love with Rumi's Philosophy of Love. The findings of this discussion reveal that, despite their differences, the philosophies of love as articulated by Jean-Paul Sartre and Jalaluddin Rumi share a commonality: both agree that love is a profound experience that can help individuals gain a deeper understanding of themselves. However, their interpretations and objectives diverge significantly. Jean-Paul Sartre, rooted in existentialist thought emphasizing reason, the rejection of God’s existence, and the belief in absolute human freedom, views love as a negative relationship because it has the potential to infringe upon one's freedom. Conversely, Jalaluddin Rumi defines love as a universal, spiritual, and sacred affection that is the foundation of all movement in the universe. Rumi's conception of love aims to guide individuals toward spiritual perfection, grounded in the belief that Divine Love embodies everything within the cosmos. This research has yet to connect the concepts of love from both figures to resolving certain issues. Therefore, the researcher recommends that future studies include a discussion on how the concepts of love from these two figures can be applied to address specific problems. This would facilitate the direct implementation of their ideas in societal life.
