Abstract

It is a nature of all human beings were in this world have and need a religion, as they want to devout and worship to the Almighty which can protect them from any weakness or difficulties. And believing in the existence of God or the divinity is the most important things which could not be separated from embracing any kinds of religions. The teaching of the Buddha began from the doctrine of universality of suffering or Dukkha and the practical way of overcoming it. His teachings were not began from the transcendent principles which talk God and His relation to the universe. His intention was not to develop the concept of self or soul in man's mind and create more ambition for eternal life and sense pleasure. Rather, His intention was to point out the futility of the worldly life and show the correct, practical path to salvation that He discovered. Based on the mentioned explanation, it is urgent to hold a study in order to explore and know the divinity teaching in Buddhism according to its history in its literatures. For exploring and knowing the divinity teaching in Buddhism used some methods; Historical method, Analitical method and Inductive method; began from explaining Buddhism history, its growth and development, basic teachings and in the last is a conclusion of the divinity teaching in Buddhism. However, even the divinity teaching in Buddhism was not regarded as the starting point of the whole religion, it could be known at one of Early Buddhists Canonical Books, Sutta Pitaka (The Basket of Conventional Teachings), Udana (The Heartfelt Sayings) VIII verse 3. Futhermore, through the two large schools of Buddhism afterwards, the divinity teaching of the Great Buddha becomes understandable. Theravadins (The followers of Theravada, The Early Buddhism School) based their teaching on a non-theism concept which is non-personal and non-being, otherwise Mahayanists (The followers of Mahayana, The Modernist Buddhism School) based it on their theism concept by worshipping Adi-Buddha as their Almighty God.
