Abstract

"The Correlation Between Learning Through Short Films Media and Vocabulary Mastery of Sixth-Grade Students at ITTC Gontor for Girls Campus 2 Mantingan Ngawi on Academic Year 2024 - 2025" Inayatur Rahmah 42.2021.13.3026 Film-based vocabulary learning is one of the instructional media employed to deliver lessons at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, particularly at Gontor for Girls Campus 2. In this institution, vocabulary learning is a routine activity integrated into the students' daily schedule. Numerous language-based activities are incorporated into everyday routines, making film a preferred choice as a visual medium that is engaging, practical, and contextually relevant for enhancing students' vocabulary comprehension and retention. In the implementation of film as a teaching medium, films are typically shown during scheduled composition classes organized by the Islamic Teacher Training College (ITTC). Additionally, they are presented in the morning sessions during vocabulary instruction conducted by the Language Advisory Council, a department specifically responsible for language improvement initiatives. This study aims to investigate whether there is a relationship between film-based vocabulary learning and vocabulary mastery among 6th-grade students at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor for Girls Campus 2. Film-based vocabulary learning is measured using a questionnaire, while vocabulary mastery is assessed through a vocabulary test derived from sentences featured in the films that have been viewed. This research adopts a quantitative approach utilizing a survey method with a correlational model. The population comprises all 6th-grade students at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor for Girls Campus 2, totaling 200 students. The sample size was determined using the Slovin formula, resulting in 67 participants. The results of this study demonstrate a significant relationship between vocabulary learning through short films and vocabulary mastery among 6th-grade students at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor for Girls Campus 2, Mantingan, Ngawi. The SPSS output reveals a significance value of 0.000, which is less than 0.05, indicating statistical significance. The Pearson correlation coefficient is 0.757, suggesting a moderate to strong correlation. Additionally, the R Square value of 0.573 indicates that 57.3% of the variation in vocabulary mastery can be explained by vocabulary learning through short films. Based on this finding, it can be concluded that the relationship between these two variables falls within the moderate category. Based on the research results, the researcher offers several suggestions: Teachers are encouraged to present short films that align with the learning themes, followed by structured discussions and practice activities designed to enhance students' vocabulary acquisition. Additionally, incorporating film screenings or outdoor learning sessions is essential to maintaining student engagement and preventing boredom during the learning process. Keywords: English, learning English, vocabulary learning, learning through films, vocabulary mastery.
