ESCHATOLOGY IN THE QUR'AN: A CRITICAL STUDY OF RICHARD BELL'S PERSPECTIVE

oktavianti, muanita
Abstract
Eschatology in the Qur'ān includes the concepts of resurrection, judgment day, and life after death. Richard Bell, an orientalist, analyzed the eschatological verses with a historical-critical approach. He argues that the concept of resurrection in the Qur'ān evolved from the Meccan to the Medinan period, where it was initially a moral warning and later developed into a more systematic doctrine of law and justice. Bell also links the Islamic concept of eschatology to the Judeo-Christian apocalyptic tradition and suggests that some verses underwent rearrangement to suit the socio-political context of the time. However, Bell's views have been criticized by Muslim scholars. They assert that the eschatological verses in the Qur'ān are fixed and have not undergone changes as Bell claims. In addition, contemporary Muslim thinkers such as Fazlur Rahman and Quraish Shihab also criticize Bell's historical-critical approach. According to them, this method tends to ignore the theological and spiritual aspects of the eschatological verses, so that its understanding becomes limited to historical analysis without considering the broader transcendental meaning in Islamic teachings. This study analyzes Bell's method in understanding the concept of resurrection and final judgment and compares it with the interpretations of Muslim scholars. The results show that the historical-critical approach has limitations in explaining the meaning of eschatology in the Qur'an as a whole. Therefore, a more comprehensive approach is needed by considering historical, linguistic and theological aspects simultaneously. This study is expected to enrich the study of Islamic eschatology and become a reference for academics who are interested in the methodological differences between the orientalist approach and Islamic interpretation in understanding the concept of the end times. Thus, this study not only sharpens the understanding of eschatology in the Qur'an, but also opens up space for further analysis of the methodology of Islamic studies and criticism of the orientalist approach.
