Abstract
Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor is one of the educational institutions whose students come from various regions of Indonesia and also from various countries such as Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand etc. While at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor Ponorogo they could not avoid contact/communication with students from Indonesia, so that adjustments, modifications, and adaptations of intercultural communication occurred due to cultural differences. One way of communicating between cultures to achieve understanding in communication is called communication accommodation. This study aims to determine the process of communication accommodation using the strategy of convergence, divergence and excessive accommodation in intercultural communication of new students abroad at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor Ponorogo. The theory used in this study is the Communication Accommodation Theory from Howard Giles. The analysis in this study uses a descriptive qualitative method from the results of interviews and observations in the field. The results of the study showed that new students abroad carried out various accommodation strategies (convergence) to overcome communication challenges, such as language adjustment, adaptation to local social norms, and learning about Indonesian culture and the education system of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. In addition, interaction with local students and teachers plays an important role in this adaptation process. This study also identifies a tendency for divergence in intercultural communication accommodation with Indonesian students, some of the adaptations faced are language differences and cultural perceptions that can affect the effectiveness of communication. The final result was excessive accommodation which was considered by the dormitory roommates who came from Indonesia as a form of their approach. However, there are also those who feel strange about the behavior of new students abroad who do excessive accommodation. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the dynamics of intercultural communication in the international educational environment and can be used as a reference for the development of better accommodation strategies in similar educational institutions. The practical implications of this study include the need for more intensive intercultural communication direction and training and stronger support for students from abroad to make their adaptation process smoother and more effective
