COMMUNICATION STRATEGY OF LANGUAGE CENTER IN LEARNING ARABIC AT UNIVERSITY OF DARUSSALAM GONTOR
Abstract
Arabic language ability is an important requirement in carrying out studies at the
University of Darussalam Gontor. Arabic is the language of instruction in lectures and in
everyday communication. The Language Center is present as the institution responsible
for the implementation of Arabic language learning activities, so it requires a strategy in
learning Arabic that is able to support students so they can meet these needs. This study
aims to analyze the communication strategy and the obstacles experienced by the language
center in learning Arabic for students. This study uses a qualitative approach. Methods of
data collection is done through observation, interviews and documentation. Analysis of the
results of the study used the Miles and Hubberman model of field data analysis techniques.
The results showed that the communication strategy of the language center at Darussalam
Gontor University in learning Arabic for students was carried out through the following
steps: (1) The selection of teaching staff was based on expertise so that the teachers were
UNIDA Gontor alumni who had competence in Arabic. Attractiveness is based on aspects of
homophily and heterophily with students who are supported by the expertise of the teaching
staff, (2) Mapping of students is based on aspects of sociodemographic background. (3) the
preparation of messages packaged in the form of learning that is educative with the direct
learning method ( thariqoh mabasyarah) besides that, language zones are also applied for
students so that they can develop Arabic language skills to the fullest, (4) The selection of
learning media prioritizes the presence of the teacher as Media presentations are assisted
by representational media in the form of written media and mechanical media in the form
of computers and projectors. Insufficient number of teaching staff is one of the obstacles
in learning Arabic. This research makes a positive contribution to the development of
communication science, especially in the communication strategy for learning Arabic at
Darussalam Gontor University.
