HUMANISM OF ISLAM ACCORDING TO ISMAIL RAJI AL-FARUQI AS A CRITIQUE OF GLOBAL ETHIC
Abstract
The global issues faced by the world are closely tied to human moral actions. This prompted the Parliament of the World’s Religions to declare a Global Ethic as a universal ethical value. The Global Ethic seeks to unify all religious adherents under a common ethical framework. However, in practice, it adopts Western humanistic values as the moral foundation for humanity, leading to confusion in its implementation.
Therefore, this article aims to present the concept of Humanism of Islam according to Ismail Raji Al-Faruqi, one of the most prominent contemporary scholars, as a critique of the problematic Western humanism that is embraced within the Global Ethic.
This research employs a philosophical approach, emphasizing the discussion of human ethical axiology. The researcher uses a descriptive method to elaborate on the concept of Humanism of Islam according to Ismail Raji Al-Faruqi and other Muslim scholars, alongside an analytical method to examine these views as a critical study of the Global Ethic.
This research reveals that humanism of Islam as the proof of Al-Faruqi's commitment to Islamization of knowledge, grounded in Tawhid, emphasizes the essence of humans being created by Allah to worship Him and to manage the earth as the moral object of their ethical actions. This contrasts with the Global Ethic, which applies Western humanism as the ethical foundation for humanity, thus sidelining divine values. Therefore, the true universal ethical value is Tawhid, with the concept of fitrah inherent in all humans as the essence of true humanity, defining moral actions as acts of worship by a servant to their Lord.
Thus, with all its limitations, the researcher hopes that this discourse can provide a positive contribution to the study of ethics, especially from an Islamic perspective. The researcher recommends that future studies further explore the principles of Tawhid-based ethics in Islam to demonstrate its essential values to the global community.
