Abstract

This research has motivated by the raised cases of Religious Hate Speech which is a challenge to diversity and harmony in Indonesia. The case of Basuki Tjahya Purnama, Saifuddin Ibrahim, and Joseph Paul Zhang is one example. The problem continued because Religious Hate Speech has equated with rights and Freedom of Speech guaranteed by law. Departed from that, this study has aim for explained the meaning of Religious Hate Speech and examined its relation to the concept of rights and Freedom of Speech. From there, the researcher then analyzed the implications caused by Religious Hate Speech on religious harmony in Indonesia. The type of this research is qualitative based on the library data, both printed and digital. Using a descriptive-analytic method, the researcher described the concept of Religious Hate Speech and analyzed its impact on religious harmony in Indonesia. Therefore, the researcher used a sociological approach because this study examines the interactions and influences between individuals or between groups of people, which in this case affect harmony. The researcher found that Religious Hate Speech is utterances, expressions, and other acts of hatred with the aim of inciting, insulting, and humiliating. Judged from its scope, Religious Hate Speech occurred in the real world and cyberspace (social media). Meanwhile, from its form, it included hate speech in verbal and non-verbal formats. As seen from the object, Religious Hate Speech can be directed at an individual person (personal) or the wider community (social). Therefore, the resulting impact also affected individuals and society in general. Personally, the object of hatred will be discriminated against, shamed, and possibly lead to acts of anarchism. Meanwhile, at the social level, Religious Hate Speech not only breeds hatred and destroyed harmony, but it can also even lead to the disintegration of the Indonesian nation. Thus, Religious Hate Speech did not include rights and Freedom of Speech. It even included religious blasphemy. Finally, the researcher believes that the research is far from simplified. As a consequence, the researcher hopes that future researchers will be able to continue and write about the problem of Religious Hate Speech from a different perspective.
