Abstract

When science and technology begin to appear fastly since enlightement in Europe, the concept of God that be orientation of life getting be left. Everything can be explained by the science and no will of God nor religions truth. Atheism isn't something to be hidden. In the other side, religion is deemed as the source of conflicts and hardness, proved by a lot of riots and even religions warfare. So, the other group be optional to take the way by making peace of all of religions. By the reason of humanity and brotherhood, they tries to seek the meeting point of world religions which presented since ancient centuries. He is Huston Smith a foremost theologian in United States, who began his thought from his own religious experiences, and he wrote it in his famous book "The World Religions". So, here the researcher prefer to choose the concept of Primordial Tradition which offering by Huston Smith, seeing of the uniqueness character of him which puts up a good fight in "missionary endeavor" in secular country United States. Also his experience in practicing religious service of all religions. Whereas the aim of this thesis writing is understanding what is the concept offering by Huston Smith about the Primordial Tradition, although the criticism from both of West and Islamic scholars about this concept. In writing this thesis the researcher used theology approach which refer to Huston Smith's thought about religions. And what is more, the researcher used descriptive method and analysis method to explore the concepts of Huston Smith and beat out deeply his thoughts. Afterwards, by critical method the researcher tried to bring the critique for that thought, by adopting some ideas from mosleem scholars. Here, inferential that the concept which offering by Huston Smith about The Primordial Tradition, is unsuitable by Islamic doctrine. Although looked like a breath of air which gives peacefulness for ideology crisis that happening and acceptable to western society, yet it's actuality is bigger and more complex problem. In this case because of the faith mishmash and ambiguous of divine concept, by blurring out the interfaith's bulkhead. Finally, the researcher acknowledge of many flaws in writing this thesis, so a great of hope the correction and more seriously research about Huston Smitia and his concept especially under consideration of Primordial Tradition.
