THE IMPLICATION OF WILAYATUL FAQIH SYSTEM ON IRAN'S RESPONSE TO THE ISRAELI AIRSTRIKE ON IRANIAN EMBASSY IN DAMASCUS 2024
Abstract
On April 1, 2024, Israel launched an airstrike on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, resulting in the death of two senior Quds Force generals and seven members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This incident prompted Iran to execute a retaliatory strike on April 13, 2024. This study aims to analyze the implications of the Wilayatul Faqih system on Iran's retaliation policy in response to Israel's attack on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus. This research implement a qualitative approach and textual analysis, the references of the research based on secondary sources such as academic journals, scholarly articles, international documents, and pertinent news reports. The finding indicated that Iran's retaliation against Israel exemplifies the impact of the Wilayatul Faqih system as a primary factor shaping Iran's retaliation policy. This influence is evident in several aspects: a) Iran's retaliation policy is closely tied to the roles of the Supreme Leader and the President of Iran as the key of decision-makers; b) the retaliatory actions against Israel, designated as Operation True Promise, are guided by the Wilayatul Faqih system, which directs Iran's foreign policy; c) the backing from countries such as Russia, China, and North Korea, as well as support from international organizations like the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union, further strengthens the trajectory of Iran's foreign policy in defending its sovereignty by the Wilayatul Faqih system. This research offers insights into how ideology can shape a nation's response within the context of international conflict.
