Abstract
The Syawalan tradition is a religious ritual that has long been practiced in the Cirebon Regency, particularly in Panembahan Village. This tradition is not only an annual ritual following Eid al-Fitr, but it also holds deep spiritual significance for the community. Through key activities such as grave pilgrimage, tahlil (Islamic remembrance), communal prayers, and social gatherings, people experience spiritual enlightenment, strengthening their connection with Allah SWT while preserving a cultural heritage that has lasted for centuries. This tradition reflecting a fusion of local values and Islamic teachings by the ancestors. This study aims to understand the spiritual experiences of the Cirebon community in the Syawalan tradition and identify the ritual elements that influence the creation of these experiences. The research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological study, utilizing observation, interviews, and documentation, with a stratified random sampling technique to obtain representative data. The findings reveal that grave pilgrimage and tahlil create a solemn atmosphere that enhances religious awareness. The concept of dzikrul maut (remembrance of death) within this tradition encourages individuals to reflect on the temporality of life and the importance of preparing for the afterlife. From a social perspective, the tradition strengthens social interaction through togetherness and cooperation. This research provides further insight into the role of the Syawalan tradition in strengthening individual spirituality and social interaction. Therefore, further studies can focus on historical, philosophical, theological, sociological, and anthropological aspects to deepen the understanding of this tradition’s significance in the lives of community members As a result, the Syawalan tradition can continue to be preserved as a cultural heritage and a means of reinforcing Islamic values.
