Abstract

Food security is a crucial issue faced by every country, especially amid the threat of a global food crisis due to climate change, population growth and geopolitical conflicts. In the Qur'an, the concept of food security has been hinted at through the story of Prophet Yusuf AS in Surah Yusuf verses 47-48. The verse describes how the Prophet Yusuf AS designed a long-term food management strategy when Egypt faced a fertile period followed by a famine period. The formulation of the problem is related to how the concept of food self-sufficiency is taught in Surah Yusuf verses 47-48 and its relevance in facing the challenges of food security in the modern era. The purpose of this study is to examine in depth the concept of food self-sufficiency reflected in Surah Yusuf verses 47-48, as well as to reveal the values and strategies of food security taught by the Prophet Yusuf AS. This research also aims to connect the concept with its application in the context of food security in the modern era, so as to find the relevance and contribution of Qur'anic values for today's food policy. In this study, researchers used the Library Research method with a thematic interpretation approach (Maudhu'i). Data were collected through literature studies from contemporary books of interpretation. After that, the data is analyzed descriptively-analytically to find the concept, strategy, and relevance of the teachings of the Prophet Yusuf AS related to food self-sufficiency with the current condition of food security. The research found that the concept of food self-sufficiency taught by Prophet Yusuf AS includes careful production planning, optimization of crop yields, effective storage, and frugal and controlled consumption patterns. This strategy proved successful in saving Egypt from a prolonged food crisis, as well as proving that food security is not only about abundant production, but also wise and sustainable management. These principles are very relevant if adopted in a modern food security system, especially in the midst of the current global food crisis. The conclusion of this study is that the concept of food self-sufficiency taught in Surah Yusuf verses 47-48 is not only relevant as a food security strategy in the past, but also able to provide guiding values and principles for modern food management. This research is expected to serve as a reference for academics, government, and the wider community in formulating food policies that are not only economically effective, but also based on spiritual and moral values.
