Alimatul Selfiya, Nur Amilia
Abstract
The event of Yahya Sinwar's death, a prominent Hamas leader, attracted international attention and was widely reported by the media, including Fox News and Al Jazeera. The coverage from these two media outlets was presented with different framing approaches. This is understood as the media's effort to shape public perception based on their respective ideologies. The objective of this study is to examine how the framing of the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar is constructed in the news coverage by Fox News and Al Jazeera. The theory used in this research is Robert N. Entman’s framing theory. This study employs the framing analysis method based on Robert N. Entman’s model. The objects of this study are all news articles related to the death of Yahya Sinwar published by Fox News and Al Jazeera, totalling 10 and 11 articles, respectively. Data collection was conducted through non-participant observation and documentation methods. The results of the study indicate that Fox News framed Yahya Sinwar's death as Israel's success in eradicating terrorism and as a step toward reducing security threats. Meanwhile, Al Jazeera framed the event as the sacrifice of a martyr and a symbol of Palestinian resistance against Israel, emphasizing aspects of occupation and calling for an end to military aggression through diplomatic resolution. This study provides novelty in the research object, focusing on international media, Fox News and Al Jazeera, with an analysis centered on the news coverage of Yahya Sinwar’s death. This research also highlights a prominent Hamas figure who has been rarely studied, particularly in the context of an individual as a central figure within the organization.
