Abstract
Poverty is a multidimensional issue that not only reflects financial deprivation but also creates widespread social and economic impacts. Jember is one of the regions with a relatively high poverty rate, reaching 224,140 people in 2024. In Islam, zakat serves as a social instrument that plays a crucial role in reducing economic disparities and enhancing comunity welfare. The National Amil Zakat Institution (Laznas) Nurul Hayat is one of the organizations responsible for collecting and distributing zakat funds to assist those in need. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the urgency and effectiveness of Laznas Nurul Hayat’s role in distributing zakat in Jember. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and the documentation of Laznas Nurul Hayat Jember’s activities in managing and distributing zakat funds. The findings indicate that Laznas Nurul Hayat implements zakat distribution programs covering economic, educational, and healthcare sectors to sustainably enhance the welfare of mustahik (zakat beneficiaries). Additionally, the institution adopts a transparent and accountable zakat management system to ensure the proper allocation of funds. Despite the positive impact of Laznas Nurul Hayat’s zakat distribution efforts, several challenges remain, such as optimizing zakat fund collection and expanding the reach of beneficiaries. Therefore, improving zakat management strategies, including broader public awareness campaigns, is necessary to enhance zakat participation. With a more effective and efficient management system, zakat can serve as an even more impactful instrument in alleviating poverty in Jember.
