Abstract
ABSTRACT A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THEMATIC STRUCTURE IN NEWS REPORTS ON THE ISRAEL-PALESTINE CONFLICT: AN SFL APPROACH Rheizza Lintang Ramadhina 42.2021.133.052 The Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach offers a framework for analyzing thematic structures in news texts about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This thematic structure influences the way information is presented and shapes certain narratives in the news. However, research specifically examining this aspect in conflict news is still limited. This study aims to analyze the thematic structure in the news of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, specifically related to the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, using the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach. This study examines topical, interpersonal, and textual themes in the reporting by BBC, Al Jazeera, and The Times of Israel. This study uses the content analysis method by analyzing 228 themes, consisting of 124 topical themes (54.39%), 47 interpersonal themes (7.02%), and 16 textual themes (17.98%). The results showed that Al Jazeera used more unmarked topical themes (45.78%) and textual themes (21.69%), emphasizing the continuity of information. BBC tends to be neutral with the dominance of unmarked topical themes (74.19%) and minimal interpersonal themes (0%). The Times of Israel is more subjective, with the use of marked topical themes (31.33%), as well as interpersonal (2.41%) and textual themes (18.07%). This difference shows how language choices in news can affect the way readers understand an event. Keywords: Thematic Structure, Systemic Functional Linguistics, Media Framing, Israel-Palestine Conflict
