Kiai Ihsan Jampes Mahabbah Concept as Solution to Islamophobia
Abstract
Islamophobia is a global phenomenon that reflects fear, prejudice, and discrimination against Islam and Muslims. This phenomenon develops due to various factors, such as politics, media, racism, and acts of terrorism, which reinforce negative perceptions of Islam. Not only in the west, Islamophobia is also found in Muslim-Majority countries, including Indonesia, with more complex forms.
This study aims to analyse the concept of mahabbah in the perspective of Sufism, especially the thought of Kiai Ihsan Jampes, and explore its relevance as a solution to Islamophobia. Using a qualitative research method based on literature study, this research examines Kiai Ihsan Jampes’ main work, Siraj Al-Thalibin, as well as other literature that discusses Islamophobia and the concept of mahabbah in Sufism.
The results show that mahabbah, which is based on love and compassion for God and fellow human beings, can be an effective approach in reducing Islamophobia. This concept is not only spiritual but also has a social impact by instilling attitudes of tolerance, empathy and peace. In addition, mahabbah can also reduce tensions within the Muslim community itself, especially in dealing with differences in religious views.
As a suggestion, the application of the concept of mahabbah can be integrated into the Islamic education system and da’wah, thus forming a more inclusive and moderate mindset. In addition, Muslims are expected to represent Islam as a religion of compassion and Rahmatan Lil ‘Alamin, both in social life and in global interactions. Thus, islamophobia can be minimised, and harmony between religious communities can be realised.
