Term of “An-Naum” and “subāta” in the Qur’an and it is Relevance on Its Role in Human Detoxification: A Linguistic and Scientific Study
Abstract
Sleep is a necessity for living beings that has been mentioned in the Qur'an and has been explained in many empirical studies. From the perspective of the Qur'an, sleep is known by the term an-naum, which refers to the natural state of rest of the body as a means of physical and mental recovery, and subātan, which describes deep and sound sleep as a form of cessation of activity to achieve total recovery. However, sleep is often underestimated, especially by humans, because its effects are not immediately noticeable but have a detrimental impact over time.
This study aims to analyze the terminological meanings of sleep—an-naum and subāt—in the Qur’an and to relate them to the process of bodily detoxification from the perspective of modern science. Specifically, this research correlates the characteristics of the term subāt with the deep sleep phase in the stages of human sleep.
This study employs a qualitative approach through library research by examining key Qur’anic verses, such as QS. Al-Furqan (25):47 and QS. An-Naba’ (78):9, using the methods of linguistic exegesis (i‘jaz bayānī) and scientific exegesis (i‘jaz ‘ilmī).
The findings reveal a strong harmony between the Qur’anic concept of sleep and modern scientific discoveries, demonstrating a profound coherence between revelation and science. The Qur’an not only portrays sleep as a physiological necessity and a divine gift of restoration from Allah, but also provides scientific indications of its role in detoxification mechanisms, which can now be explained through neuroscience. Therefore, this study reinforces the concept of the scientific miracle of the Qur’an (i‘jaz ‘ilmī) and emphasizes the importance of sleep quality for both physical and spiritual health.
Furthermore, this research is expected to help change the perception that sleep is unimportant for bodily health. For future researchers who wish to continue this study, the author humbly acknowledges that human beings are prone to forgetfulness and error, and it is undeniable that this research still contains limitations, whether in terms of language or the absence of direct empirical research conducted by the author.
