Abstract

The teachings of Tasawuf in the world, especially in Indonesia, have become a scientific dicipline that has developed and has been widely studied and also taught by scholars, there are many scholars in Indonesia that well known in his taught in Tasawuf causes of his works or his contribution. Sheikh Yusuf al-Makassari was the one who become these famous scholars, Sheikh Yusuf al-makassari who is a Sufi figure who has a great influence in the world of Tasawuf and also became an influential figure in the development of Tasawuf in Indonesia, undoubtedly, there are significant factors supporting this accomplishment. The thought of his Tasawuf being the supportive factor in spreading the teachings of Tasawuf in Indonesia and being the factor for him to always struggling. How the thoughts in Tasawuf that he always taught or wrote in his works as Sirr al-Asrar, Zubdat al-Asrar, Matalib as-Salikin and other works. This research seeks to explain the thought of Tasawuf from Sheikh Yusuf al-Makassari, according to his works in Tasawuf and he taught to his followers, and comparing it to the other thought of Tasawuf from the other sufis especially the sufis that he wrote their names and thought in his works. This research uses the literature method, where researchers collect various sources from books related to research, then researchers inventory the sources that have been obtained, after gaining all the sources needed from the works and texts, then the researchers begin to separate it into two kinds of source, primary and secondary sources. These two kinds of sources will be used as a reference in writing down research results, after gaining the result the researchers explain the results, according to the research about Tasawuf the researcher uses sufistic approach to help in this research. Sheikh Yusuf al-Tasawuf Makassari’s focus is on the understanding of Ihatah and Ma’iyah, which states that God always surrounds and works with his servant wherever the servant is, and that the concept of ihatah and ma’iyah is not the same as understanding the unity of God with anything. Rather, the characteristic from God’s surroundings is only like a substance and a trait that are together but do not merge into one, Ihatah and Ma’iyah sheikh Yusuf al-Makassari differs from other Sufis’ understandings of Hulul and Wahdat al-Wujud, such as that of al-Hallaj, who claimed that God could become one with His creation, in that he needs to maintain that there is a distinction between God and essence or other beings. He also claims that just because God includes and surrounds all things does not indicate He is ones. Sheikh Yusuf claims that while the sensory form is a manifestation of God, it is not an absolute representation of God.
