Abstract
Students of the English Department are required to master speaking skills. However, based on a preliminary study conducted on students in 3rd semester at UNIDA Gontor has deficiencies in grammatical understanding. This research aims to discover more about the grammatical word order in speaking skills. The research object is the students of the English Language Education Department, third semester of the University of Darussalam Gontor Academic Year 2023/2024. The researcher took a sample of 50 percent of the overall population of third-semester. Then, the researcher interviewed 25 percent of the population. This research uses descriptive-qualitative research methods with a sample of regular third-semester students. The instruments used by the researcher in this research are observation, interviews, and documentation. In this case, the respondents were selected by using purposive sampling techniques. Data analysis techniques are used in data reduction, data display, conclusion, and verification. The findings of this research show that students used 23.5% of SVA, 20.5% of SVC, 16% of SVO, 34% of SVOA, and 6% of SVOC from the total 68 sentences. Moreover, several factors affect students' experiences of difficulties in word order: language proficiency, first language influence, cognitive development, instructional quality, exposure and practice, context and usage, and individual learning styles. The research findings are expected to provide some recommendations for learners to understand, construct, and use word order appropriately. Thus, this research becomes a valuable reference for upcoming studies and develops language skills in the learning environment. Keywords: Grammatical, Word Order, Speaking Skills, English Department
