Abstract

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause dull, sunburned, and dry skin. To prevent this, the use of facemist containing SPF is highly recommended for skin protection. SPF facemist can protect the skin from both UV A and UV B. One of the innovations in SPF facemist is the incorporation natural ingredients such as betel nut (Areca catechu L.) which has many benefits for skin health. This study aims to determine the important characteristics of facemist spray from betel nut seed extract as a Sun Protection Factor, namely it can hydrate the skin, refresh the skin and protect the skin from UV exposure. The research method uses an experimental method to make a facemist preparation formula from betel nut extract (Areca catechu L.) with variations in extract concentration. The extract is made with variations in concentration F0; 0%, F1; 0.5%, F2; 1%, F3; 1.5%, and F4; 2%. Data analysis was carried out by comparing the evaluation of the quality of the preparation based on SNI 16-4399-1996, then the test results were continued with analysis using the One Way Anova test. The results of the study showed the characteristics of the betel nut extract facemist preparation (Areca catechu L.) which is red, liquid, and smells of rose fragrance. The results of the pH evaluation obtained were in the range of 6.85 - 5.31; spray spread test 5cm - 6.3cm; the dry time test 1 minute 14 seconds - 2 minutes 26 seconds; and the SPF test had a value range of 0.93 - 10.86. The results of the One Way Anova test showed a significant value for the Sun Protection Factor test of <0.05, which means that the difference in the concentration of betel nut seed extract (Areca catechu L.) affects the characteristics of the betel nut extract SPF facemist preparation (Areca catechu L.) with vegetable glycerin as a humectant.
