THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BLOOD PRESSURE AND JUNK FOOD EATING HABITS AND THE INCIDENCE OF TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS AT THE KEDUNGGALAR HEALTH CENTER
Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus is one of the health problems with increasing prevalence. contributing factors include high pressure and a history of eating junk food. The relationship between blood pressure and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is influenced by the thickening of arterial walls, which narrows the diameter of blood vessels. Additionally, a history of consuming junk food that is high in salt, sugar, and fat can lead to fat accumulation and increased blood sugar levels, ultimately resulting in insulin resistance. This study aims to analyze the relationship between blood pressure and a history of junk food consumption habits in relation to the incidence of type 2 DM at the Kedunggalar Health Center. The research method used is a case-control design. Using purposive sampling, the study sample was calculated with the Lameshow formula, resulting in 50 respondents in each group. The inclusion criteria for the study consisted of patients with type 2 diabetes (DM) for the case group and a non-type 2 DM control group. All participants were treated at the Kedunggalar Health Center, able to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally, and aged between 20 and 59 years. Data analysis was conducted using the chi-square test. The results indicated that 67.7% of the DM group exhibited abnormal blood pressure, while 65% reported a history of poor eating habits involving junk food. The results of the correlation test indicated a significant relationship between blood pressure and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), with a p-value of 0.002 and an odds ratio (OR) of 3.622. Additionally, there was a significant association between a history of junk food eating habits and type 2 DM, also with a p-value of 0.002 and an OR of 3.451.In conclusion, there is a significant connection between high blood pressure and a history of junk food consumption with the incidence of type 2 DM at the Kedunggalar Health Center.
