Abstract

The Japan-European Union Free Trade Agreement (JEFTA), which took effect in 2019, served as a crucial catalyst in strengthening economic ties between Japan and the European Union while creating significant opportunities for the expansion of the creative industry, particularly anime. The anime industry functioned not only as a medium of entertainment but also as a tool of cultural diplomacy capable of reaching a global audience. This study aimed to analyze the impact of JEFTA on the development of Japan’s creative economy in the anime sector, with a particular focus on collaborations between Japanese and European anime studios during the 2019–2024 period. The research methodology adopts a qualitative descriptive approach, utilizing various literary sources and document data analysis to identify growth trends. The findings indicated that JEFTA significantly enhanced market access for Japanese anime products in Europe by reducing tariffs and eliminating non-tariff barriers. Moreover, cross-cultural collaborations between Japanese and European studios accelerated innovation in both production techniques and storytelling, leading to content that was more relevant and appealing to international audiences. However, the study also highlighted several challenges, particularly in preserving cultural authenticity and maintaining product quality amid rapid market expansion. Addressing these challenges required stronger intellectual property rights protection and the implementation of incentives to encourage sustainable collaboration between Japanese and European creators. With the influence of JEFTA, Japan’s anime industry could not only safeguard its cultural identity but also make a substantial and sustainable contribution to the global economy.
