Abstract

This research examines the nature of sin in the Qur'an based on the perspective of Quraish Shihab in Tafsir Al-Misbah. With a thematic interpretation approach, this research connects various terms of sin such as dzanbun, itsmun, jurmun, sayyi'ah, khati'ah, munkar, fahisya' and junah. In-depth understanding of the concept of sin for Muslims in the modern era, so that it can be a relevant moral guide. The research method used is qualitative with a library research approach. The main data comes from the Qur'an and Tafsir Al-Misbah, and is supported by relevant secondary sources. Data analysis is done descriptively and inductively to identify main patterns and categories. This research also emphasizes the importance of social, psychological, and cultural contexts in understanding sin. In Tafsir Al-Misbah, Quraish Shihab explains that sin not only involves violating God's commandments, but also has social and psychological impacts. For example, shirk as a major sin that is not forgiven, as well as other sins such as usury, adultery, and consumption of forbidden food are explained in detail through various verses of the Qur'an. This approach provides a holistic insight into the consequences of sin both individually and collectively. The results show that sin in the Qur'an has a variety of meanings according to the terms used. Sins are classified into two main categories: major sins (kabair), which are explicitly mentioned with the threat of severe punishment, and minor sins (saghirah), which are not explicitly mentioned as major sins. Quraysh Shihab's approach enriches the understanding of the relationship between human behavior and its impact on social order and sunnatullah. This research still opens up opportunities for further study of the nature of sin from Quraish Shihab's perspective. It is hoped that future research can perfect this study with a more in-depth and scientific approach, thus contributing to the process of Islamization of science and enrichment of Nusantara Tafsir.
