Learning English as a second or foreign language often faces challenges in improving students' speaking skills. One effective method to overcome this challenge is through public speaking courses. Research shows that public speaking can improve students' confidence and speaking ability in English. Public speaking activities are seen as an important means to develop communication skills, increase self-confidence, and strengthen English language skills, especially speaking skills. Thus, this study aims to analyze the implementation of public speaking activities and the problems found in this activities. The research gap as the basic of this research was public speaking which has been run at this boarding school for several years, but the fact was this activities couldn’t motivate some students to speak English well and build their confidence to speak in front of the public, although they had joined this program for a long time and have to struggle for making a good text and performance.
Then, the researcher analyzed this implementation and its problems in public speaking activities based on the research gap. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection through observation, interview, and documentation. The results show that the implementation of public speaking is done systematically, involving various interactive methods such as speech simulation, group discussion, and evaluation. This activities gets good support from the learning environment but also faces some obstacles, such as students' nervousness, differences in individual abilities, limited practice time, and rules that are perceived as strict by some students.
Despite the obstacles, public speaking activities have a significant positive impact on the development of students' abilities, especially in terms of communication and mastery of English. This study recommends increasing the intensity of practice, variations in learning methods, special training for teachers, and periodic evaluations to optimize the results of this program.
