The Effect of Movie (Ms. Marvel) on Comprehending Speech Rate Delivery on Listening Activity
Abstract
Media is a tool used for various purposes. In addition, the media has also been widely used in the learning process. Choosing the appropriate media to be applied in the learning process is very important because this media will effect the learning process. One of the media in learning is movies. A movie is a medium that uses audio-visual to make an interesting impression on students. In addition, the application of film in learning English can improve students’ listening skill. This ability requires the listener to be able to receive information correctly. In addition, listening to foreign languages with different speaking speeds is also one of the difficulties for non-native speakers. The purpose is to determine whether the 5th -grade students of Gontor for Girls Campus 3 achieve better understanding in listening comprehension through the film Ms. Marvel, particularly in understanding speech delivered at different speaking rates. The research method used in this study is quantitative. This research uses a quasi-experimental design involving experimental and control classes in the research process. The experimental class in this study applied Ms. Marvel film media, while the control class applied audio clip media. The results showed that the control class had a post-test score of 44.73, while the experimental class had a score of 53.78. With Sig. Asymp. of 0.00 which means that there is a significant difference between the two groups. Suggestions to researchers to increase the effectiveness of listening with Ms. Marvel. Students are encouraged to take learning more seriously by utilizing new media.
