ANALYZING THE TRANSLATION SKILLS OF ISLAMIC TERMINOLOGIES AMONG PESANTREN-BASED UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Hanum, Sania Fauziah
Abstract
This study carries significant value as it connects language education with the precise translation of religious terms, particularly Islamic terminology. In academic environments where English serves as the medium for delivering religious content, it becomes essential that translations accurately convey the original meanings. By focusing on students from pesantren-based institutions—who are equipped with both strong language skills and religious knowledge—this research highlights how their translation decisions demonstrate their grasp of both linguistic and spiritual concepts. The results of this study not only enhance translation practices in educational contexts but also enrich broader discussions about cross-cultural and multilingual understanding in the realm of Islamic studies. The findings reveal that pure borrowing is the most commonly employed translation technique, appearing in 195 out of 302 analyzed data points (64,6%). It is most dominant in epistemological concepts (96%), followed by practical application (57,9%), and spiritual concepts (35,8%). Other identified techniques include established equivalent (19,2%), adaptation (5,6%), naturalized borrowing (4,6%), reduction (4,0%), amplification (1,3%), and particularization (0,7%). Regarding accuracy, the study finds that 389 out of 600 translations (64,8%) are classified as accurate, with an overall accuracy score of 2,6. The epistemological category has the highest accuracy, with 189 accurate translations and an accuracy score of 2,9. This study concludes that pure borrowing is the most frequently used technique in producing accurate translations, as many Islamic terms retain their meaning more effectively without modification.
