Abstract
The English language is an international language, the importance of the English language in this era cannot be denied because English is the most significant common language spoken universally. Writing is a crucial skill in learning English, to master writing skills needs to understand the errors or systematic writing called Grammar. Moreover, writing needs the perception of the writer to encourage the thoughts and feeling about Grammar. According to the preliminary study, most students in the fourth grade of ITTC Gontor for Girls campus three seldom practice Grammar in writing class. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the student’s perception of grammar in writing class and what is the factor that affecting the student’s perception of grammar in writing class. The purpose of this study is (1) to find out the students’ perception of grammar in writing class and (2) to know the factors affecting the students’ perception of grammar in writing class. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with percentages. There were 30 respondents from fourth-grade students of ITTC Gontor for girls’ campus three by using random sampling techniques. Data collection techniques used for interview guidance include questions of interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. Data analysis uses three stages: condensation, display, and conclusion drawing. Then, the author tested the validity of the data using triangulation and member checking. This research concludes that (1) most students perceive grammar as important in writing class. However, the benefit of using grammar to avoid a fault in writing and become a communication tool for humans (2) the factors affecting students’ perception of grammar are influenced by 4 categories of factors: Experience, Motivation, Personal Background, and environment. Based on the conclusion above, the researcher provided some suggestions: (1) students may be better at learning grammar and may have grammar while writing class or writing an English text, grammar can help students arrange words in a good sentence (2) the several factors such as experience, motivation, personal background, and environment can be affected to the student’s perception. Positive or negative values in the learning process can come from the perception of the students. Keywords: English Language, Students’ Perception, Grammar, and Writing class.
