Abstract

ABSTRACT The Second Coming of Jesus according to Catholicism and Protestanism Muhammad Hafidz Muzakky 3920182120369 This thesis discusses the differences and similarities in the understanding of the second coming of Jesus Christ in the Catholic and Protestant traditions. The focus of the research is to analyse the doctrines, biblical interpretations, and theological implications produced by these two traditions. On the other hand, the Protestant tradition, especially the Evangelical and Pentecostal denominations, focus on the eschatological and apocalyptic aspects of Jesus' coming. They refer to prophecies in the Bible, particularly the Book of Revelation, and emphasise the importance of a personal relationship with Christ as the primary preparation. This focus on eschatological prophecies and expectations indicates a strong emphasis on the end times and the hope for renewal brought by Jesus' coming. Using a qualitative approach, this study collected data from liturgical texts, official church documents, as well as interviews with religious leaders from both traditions. The results show that despite differences in eschatological emphasis, both traditions agree on the importance of the second coming as a moment of fulfilment of God's promise and hope for the faithful. The findings provide new insights into how the second coming of Jesus can serve as a bridge for inter-denominational dialogue, as well as its implications for the spiritual life of Christians. The results of this study make an important contribution to Christian theology by enriching the understanding of eschatology and strengthening ecumenical cooperation. By highlighting the different yet complementary perspectives of Catholics and Protestants, this research not only provides theological insights but also inspires unity and collaboration in the Christian faith. Thus, this research is expected to contribute to the understanding and harmony between churches in Indonesia.
