Abstract
Abstract Reseacher: Ahmad Hisyam Syamil, 2025, Critique on Fazlur Rahman’s Concept of Shūrā. Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohamad Latief, M. A. Keywords: Fazlur Rahman, Islamic Worldview, Shūrā, Democracy. Fazlur Rahman, a prominent Islamic thinker, advocated an inclusive and adaptive reinterpretation of Shūrā, integrating it with the principles of modern democracy to create a just and participatory model of government. However, Rahman's perspective faces a critical challenge. Although Rahman envisioned a Shūrā-based democracy that upheld Islamic moral and spiritual values. This research aims to criticize the relationship between the concept of Shūrā in Islam and democracy, by exploring how the two meet and differ in their basic principles and practical applications. This research highlights the need for a more coherent framework that integrates Shūrā with modern governance while remaining rooted in the Islamic Worldview. This study uses qualitative research with data analysis methods carried out by data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. This type of research is included in the category of library research. In this study, researcher used some theoretical frameworks, such as Shūrā, Democracy, and Islamic Worldview, as the basis for establishing a scientific research process followed by a critical process to make hypotheses and general conclusions about the concept of Shūrā according to Fazlur Rahman. The most important result of this research is that the critique of Fazlur Rahman’s concept of Shūrā based on the Islamic worldview centers on the tension between modernist reinterpretation and the sacred, divine essence of Islamic governance. The researcher contends that his approach risks secularizing and rationalizing Shūrā, potentially disconnecting it from its divine roots (Ilāhī) and the integrative framework of Sharī’ah. these critiques reflect broader concern about preserving the authenticity and transcendence of Islamic principles while addressing contemporary challenges.
