THE EFFECTIVENESS OF KUMON LEARNING METHOD TOWARD STUDENT’S READING COMPREHENSION SKILL

Abstract
Indonesia's continuous efforts to improve its national education system show how important education is for a country's development. Although the country has abundant natural resources, the country's most important growth in education is also highly dependent on the quality of its human resources. Given the importance of English in communication, education, and job prospects, fluency in English is a very crucial component. Unfortunately, the current Indonesian Education Curriculum no longer makes English a compulsory subject for primary school students. This, has created a learning gap that worries the parents. Learning English as early as possible at a golden age can have a tremendous impact especially in the context of education and future skills of children. Because of this policy, many parents have enrolled their children in English language courses at various courses. One example is Kumon, a well-known educational institution with a global reputation for its rigorous and effective approach to teaching Mathematic and English. In this study, the EFL Class at one of Kumon's branches in Purwokerto was examined in relation to improving students' reading comprehension skills. The research looked at Kumon's curriculum, learning methods, and EFL students' learning process to see how this tutoring center applies their methods in English language learning. Through a qualitative approach, this research examined how Kumon's distinctive learning methodology encouraged students' learning independence and motivation, so that they could acquire English reading comprehension skills. This research aims to highlight the importance of implementing the Kumon program in helping to improve student’s English language skills and to validate the Indonesian public's appreciation of Kumon tutoring, which is considered to address parents’ concerns in helping their students improve their English language skills to achieve better English language proficiency and become more globally competitive. The results of this study showed how important Kumon's contribution was as an English language tutor that provided additional education outside the classroom.
