THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS' LEARNING MOTIVATION AND STUDENTS' LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT IN LEARNING ENGLISH THROUGH COOPERATIVE LEARNING STRATEGY
Abstract
In the learning process especially in English, learning motivation is one of
the factors that can enhance students' learning outcomes. Students need effective
learning, so keeping their learning motivation is crucial. Learning motivation is
divided into two: intrinsic motivation (motivation that comes from students
themselves) and extrinsic motivation (motivation that comes from outside of
students). Based on the preliminary study, students at Ma’had Muqoddasah
Litahfidzil Qur’an show low motivation proving that they do not want to ask
for unclear material.
The objective of this research is to know the correlation between students’
learning motivation and students’ learning achievement in learning English through
a cooperative learning strategy. It was conducted at Ma’had Muqoddasah
Litahfidzil Qur’an. The research applied a correlation method design. The
population is 11-grade students and the sample is taken using random sampling with
40 students. The techniques used to collect the data in this research are
questionnaires, tests, and documentation. Besides, the techniques for data analysis
are normality test, homogeneity test, linearity test and hypothesis test. The data
analysis used SPSS 22 for Windows.
This study summarises that there is a weak correlation between students’
learning motivation and students’ learning achievement in learning English through
a cooperative learning strategy. The hypothesis test gathered from the Pearson
correlation test, the significant value is 0.194 > 0.05 and the r value is 0.210. It
meant that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted.
In conclusion, this research summarises that the correlation between
students’ learning motivation and students’ learning achievement in learning
English has a positive correlation but is in a weak range. The author offers the
following suggestions: (1) A cooperative learning strategy can be used in the
classroom for positive correlation (2) it is expected that this research can give
valuable insight to future researchers.
