TALKING STICK MEDIA TO INVESTIGATE THIRD GRADE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILLS: GONTOR FOR GIRLS CAMPUS 3
Abstract
Some students still often face challenges in improving their skills. This is influenced by
the learning methods and media that have not called them to have an interest in English. Some
students have not mastered Speaking skills especially in English as seen from several factors
namely pronunciation, fluency, grammar, and also vocabulary mastered. Talking stick media is a
media with the help of a stick that makes it easier for students to express their ideas. In order to
improve students' speaking ability, researchers tried to examine the effect of Talking Stick media
on improving students' speaking ability, especially in English. This study aims was to determine
the effect of Talking Stick media on improving speaking skills in English for grade 3 students at
Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor Putri Campus 3 Ngawi.
The research was conducted using experimental quantitative research methods with the
Nonequivakent Control Group Design approach. The population in this study was class 3C and
class 3D at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor Putri Campus 3 Ngawi with a sample size of 60
students with a cluster random sampling technique. The data collection methods used were tests
and documentation. The data analysis used is the pre-requisite test and independent sample t-test
with SPSS 22.
From the research it can be concluded that: 1) There is a difference in the average
speaking ability of students using Talking Stick Media, which is 80.33 higher than the use of
Picture-based learning media of 69.67. 2) The results of the independent sample t-test prove a
significant influence between Talking Stick media on students' speaking ability with a sig value.
0.000 <0.05 which means H1 is accepted.
Based on the conclusion, the researcher suggests: 1) Talking stick media can be an
alternative media in the learning process, especially in English lessons. 2) It can create students'
interest in learning to speak English.
